I've been in the fitness industry for over twenty years and have either taught or participated in thousands of yoga classes of various styles (i.e., Hatha, Ashtanga, Bikram, Moksha, Core Power and the list goes on and on) but there is just something magical about practicing yoga without walls, windows or mirrors getting in the way! Think about how "zen" it would be to truly salute the sun as you reach upwards to the endless sky, standing in Mountain pose on a mountain top or balance in Tree pose in a forest of trees ... breathtaking. And ... that's exactly what you get to experience when you drop by the East Village Experience Centre Deck on Tuesday at noon for their FREE Yoga class (and it's open to ANYONE who wants to join in on the fun)!!
- Amidst the hustle and bustle of the construction in the buildings beside us, Stef Rizvi, a local yoga instructor teaching at the HIFI Yoga Club , Breathe Hot Yoga and The Sweat Lab , masterfully leads the class (rain or shine) through 60 minutes of mind-calming (and muscle-burning) postures as we drown out the noise, focus on our breath, centre the mind and body, and connect to our inner and outer strengths. But ... don't let her soothing yogi voice fool you! She will not hesitate to KICK YOUR BUTT !!
Each class is different and inspired by postures and vinyasas from various types of yoga, which makes it both challenging and fun for the yoga newbie to the seasoned yoga master! Regardless, feeling the sun on your skin, the wind at your back and the earth under your feet does something to your body and soul that an indoor yoga studio simply can't ... connect with nature and the "live" environment.
So ... if you're looking to participate in Stef's Yoga class, here are a few recommendations before you make the trip to the EV Experience Centre:
- Wear appropriate clothing (easy to move in and breathable).
- Bring your yoga mat, water bottle and towel.
- Wear sunscreen.
- Parking is available nearby but be prepared to spend a few dollars for the hour.
- Bring a couple of extra dollars because you'll catch a glimpse of the Phil & Sebastian , Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and charbar in the Simmons Building across the way and you will be tempted to replenish the calories you just burned off (which is exactly what happened to me today)!
It's the perfect break in the middle of your work day as it's just steps from the downtown core and provides a breathtaking view that only the East Village can offer!
